Library Description

A storehouse of knowledge, Carmel School has a well-stocked library of books, magazines, journals, encyclopedias, atlas, reference books and much more that both students and teachers benefit from.
The library equips students with a life-long learning habit helps develop imagination in their Young Minds.
Comfortable furniture, pindrop silence and a cheerful librarian ever willing to help and guide the reader, provide a conducive environment to read, think and learn effectively.
Primary
Knowledge gained through a teacher takes away the ignorance from the pupils and the skills so developed make him/her independent in learning further, one such live example is the Library classes conducted in Primary Classes of Carmel School. Keeping in mind the skills developed in previous classes at each level the pupils are given books accordingly using �step up technique� of skill development.
In each level 40 to 50 different story books are issued. Each section of 40 pupils enjoys 1 library period a week. Story books based on human values, moral values, ethical values, detective stories, informative books based on science, social science and other subjects, comics, mythological stories, encyclopedia, autobiography and so on.
In levels 1 and 2, the children are given short story books where in stories are depicted through animals in simple language. In few periods they are given a chance to narrate the stories that were previously read by them and in few periods the teacher narrates the stories showing related pictures.
In levels 3 and 4, the library period is handled in different ways. Firstly, children are given a chance to choose the books from a lot and the same is exchanged by each other after they read. Then the children are allowed to speak about the story and express their views about it. Secondly, the class is divided into 2, each group is given 20 to 25 copies of same books and the same set is exchanged with the other group in the following weeks. Thirdly, a class is given 40 to 50 copies of the same books containing different stories. At the end of the session, children’s comprehension is tested by asking questions where inactive participation is enjoyed by children.
Role play method is one of the technique used to involve children into reading habits and to test their comprehension levels. Children also use dictionaries to find out the meanings; word games, crossword puzzles, are also played utilizing the library period
Middle School
The middle school library section houses approximately 10,000 books written by various authors along with reference books.
High School
There are about 6,000 books in the High School library, and these include storybooks, novels, biographies, autobiographies, encyclopaedias, self-help books, and books related to quizzes, arts and crafts, sports, Scouts and Guides, and mythology. In addition, many general and reference books are available. We also subscribe to six newspapers (English and Kannada) and several magazines such as Tell Me Why, Down to Earth, Science Reporter, Wisdom, Digital Learning, Chandamama, India Today, and others in regional languages.
We also provide subject books from different authors and publishers, which help students gather more information. Previous years’ question papers are also maintained. These, along with reference books, can be xeroxed within the school premises.
We have books for different levels — short and simple ones for first-time readers and novels for advanced readers. There are books by various Indian and foreign authors such as R. K. Narayan, R. K. Laxman, Anita Desai, Chetan Bhagat, J. K. Rowling, Agatha Christie, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Alistair MacLean, Charles Dickens, Jeffrey Archer, John Grisham, Rick Riordan, Arthur Hailey, Cornelia Funke, and many others.
We also help students select general and subject books and gather information for projects, competitions, and assembly topics.
Interested students give book reviews, and the good ones are awarded prizes.
The library is open from 9.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. every day, enabling students to borrow, return, and read newspapers, magazines, and books of their choice.
We procure a good number of books for the library every year, including a couple of yearbooks.
